#26 Growing things

Ah, today has been a nice day with promises or at least possibilities for things to come. Sometimes the future weighs down on me while other times it's hard to feel anything but excitement.
There's lots to do in the morning, well maybe afternoon. But for now I think I'll join the rest of the city and fall soundly asleep in the soothing embrace of the night fog.

Drawing the twenty-sixth.

Voiced Interdental Fricative vs. Voiceless Interdental Fricative. A fight to the death.

Oh Linguistics. So violent by nature.

#25 Opened up

I seem to be channeling my lizard forefathers. Doesn't that suck?

Drawing the twenty-fifth.

The countdown to crazy begins!

I'm becoming a social recluse for the next five days. Too much schoolwork. Too much.

#24 Help

I think I need someone to rescue me. I want to break everything I've ever loved.

Drawing the twenty-fourth.

Door guy at CBTG's drew something like this on my hand last night, and consequently, it ended up backwards on my face in the morning... Now it's on paper! Little thing gets around...

Also, I've run out of room in my sketchbook, so I drew this on regular white computer paper, and the ink bled a little. Lame.

Drawing the twenty-third.

What will we do when the sky finally falls? We've got pieces of legends to guide us, that's all. But if we can learn to sing like music is everything, we've got something worth leaving on...

#23 Flip-cup

Okay, so this one isn't much of a winner but I didn't shoot much today. I did however go to the EWB and Linguistics mixers on campus. This shot was from the Linguistics mixer during one of many heated games of flip-cup.

The reason I like this snap shot, other than the fact that the cup is captured in mid air, is that the girls were decidedly better at the game than the boys. I think his expression of focus and her victorious body language communicate the situation rather well.

#22 Clown

Wanna go play somewhere in a grassy field? Sweatered and sneakered, we'll spin around fast 'til we hit the ground laughing.

Drawing the twenty-second.

Papers, papers, papers. I'm hoping to get a life back for a little while this weekend...

Photo the twenty-first.

What's with all these papers being due so early in the term? Ugh...

#21 Star

I wasn't in the best of moods yesterday. Sometimes you get comfortable for a good while until suddenly you see yourself as you imagine someone else would see you and you don't like what you see. It's hard realizing you can't change all in one go.

Well today was a good day. Not a great day, but I'll take what I can get.

You're a star.

#20 Folk

Sweet Dreams.

Drawing the twentieth.

Technically I finished this drawing long before midnight, but I had to run out the door before I could post it. Still counts.

Today, I made two pleasant discoveries, and they both influenced this drawing. The first is the tv show Pushing Daisies, which is pretty much just awesome. The second is actually a rediscovery, but its neat nonetheless. Go here to check out some neat paper art.

Tonight I went to see Dead Language again at the Grapevine. It was Packed with a capital P. Seriously, standing room only, get nice and cozy with your neighbor, touched frequently by random strangers packed. ♥ Dead Language. Ghost Bees played afterward, I only got to see a little bit, because by the time I left and came back, they were playing outside on the sidewalk, surrounded by a crowd of people. That was very cool, but freezing, and I was definitely not dressed for the weather.

It's raining buckets outside now, and I'm enjoying the sound. Goodnight!

Painting the nineteenth.

I think that the quality of my submissions here directly correlates with the amount of homework I have done on that particular day... Today I did lots of homework, so I just played with mixing colors.

Whee.

#19 Duck

I don't really like this one, but it was taken on the way to get amazing samosas... so there's that.

#18 Staircase

Tonight was the perfect temperature for a midnight stroll. Downtown is so calm it feels like the city is sleeping, tucked in, warm and safe.

Drawing the eighteenth.

There's a little dude under the tree havin' a nap.

In other news...I want to get a really big bookshelf, so that my books are no longer piled on top of each other everywhere.

Drawing the seventeenth.

I like guitars with interesting pick guards...

#17 On the Fence

Dr. Sam's is over now and it was so much fun. I really like sketch comedy when it's done well, I'd love to do more of that sort of thing.

Apparently I'm doing animation tomorrow morning. Yay moneys!

#16 Sensei

In other news:
Picture taken while drunk
PhotoBooth excellent for running lines with yourself
I have a 360. Woo!
What games should I get?

Oh and the show was amazing!

Drawing the sixteenth.

Soo....I'm a little late today too, but I think David and I are pretty much going by the system that the day doesn't end until we go to bed...and I have not yet gone to bed! (And I still beat David, so HA!)

Today's drawing is inspired a little bit by a drawing I did a couple of years ago, illustrating a really fun night downtown putting up posters for Wonderbolt. In an abstract sort of way. Also, I've always wanted to see the northern lights...not that I think that that's what they actually look like.

Night!

#15 Stumped

In recent news:
Dead Language are the best!
It's 2 o'clock and I have a class at 10.
I might be ready for the show tomorrow (/tonight).
Apparently today's theme is ME!

Goodnight.

(this picture is me at the juggling space, trying to figure out my act)

Photo the fifteenth.

Blaaahhh, night class = rushed!

David will hypnotize you!

Drawing the fourteenth.

It's that time again, when the weather gets clear and crisp, and sweaters and hot beverages abound. I've always enjoyed fall, I generally get to meet new people, and do exciting things. My birthday is in October, and Halloween is always fun. I even enjoy cool weather (though, once it gets below 15, it's a little unpleasant, I won't lie).

I've been trying for the last little while to draw things without having any visual reference to draw from. I feel fairly confident drawing from a picture, or drawing an object that's in front of me, so this is something a little more challenging. I've only been posting simple drawings of this kind, maybe I'll eventually post something a little more complicated, like a face or something, when I get a little more confident with it. It's too late in the evening for a latte, so I drew a coffee cup instead!

I think I'll do another three part post soon, I'd like to get back into drawing people again for a little while.

Back to homework...
Night!

#14 Stream

Dr. Sam's is opening on Friday at The Rabbittown Theatre! Today we had the tech run and some of the acts are really funny, I'm really looking forward to it. And best of all it's not a one-off, we get to perform it twice.

This was me playing with long exposures (sounds kinda dirty) after rehearsal with an improvised tripod.

#13 Hunter

Rehearsal today and tomorrow for Dr. Sam's, I think it's going to be a funny show.

Other than that, most of my day has been spent cleaning. I'm in a fairly productive mood and I'm loving having Tuesdays and Thursdays off! My life isn't just school.

It's funny looking at old journal entries from '98 and from '04. Sometimes it's nicer *not* remembering who I used to be.

Drawing the thirteenth.

Sad man with star. I think he kind of looks like a genie.

Someday I'll have something interesting to say here...

#12 Red

Hokay, I'm not a fan of this one but what are you going to do? I do however love this little red uke, and even though I can't really play him yet, when we produce anything even close to music it makes me very, very happy.

The ukulele is one of my four favorite instruments and someday I will become proficient at playing them.

Today was lots of school. The only thing that stands out of the school day is that the book of genesis is crazy... Oh and John Locke believed in the importance of education...

Here's hoping for more sunny days!

Painting the twelfth.

Paints are fun! Though, I've had something in my eye for a couple of hours. That's less fun.

Ciao.

#11 $$$

Guess what I was doing today. Rolling small change! (Oh how exciting) It was mostly a small diversion from cleaning, as everything I own is in a GIANT mess... Oh well. This photo seems to fit with this time of year, paying so much for school and of course wanting all sorts of new toys...

Last night Jeff, Lauren and I went to see Burn After Reading. The movie was worth watching just for Brad Pitt's character (You think that's a Schwinn?!) and the conversations at CIA headquarters... Okay, the 'chair' was pretty funny too.

Oh and the movie version of Choke is going to be hitting the big screen on the 26th of this month! Looks like it may be a limited release... I really want to seeeeeee it!

Painting the eleventh.

I had a pretty nice laid back Sunday today. Went water bottle shopping with Jane, lazed around the house. I decided to take out the paints again for today's submission. Acrylic on canvas paper. I've decided that it's a kryptonite tree...

I made a new banner for the top of the page, with a blurb about what this blog is all about, for those who missed the first post. Eventually I'd like to draw something for the banner, but I think I've got enough drawing to keep me busy for a while already. Also today I made a ghetto mic stand out of a clothes hanger, and it actually works really well! Look.

That's it for now. School in the morning. The moon is gorgeous tonight.

Night.

Photo/weirdness the tenth.

So, I was playing with David's camera, some food coloring, a glass of water, and my computer. Thus, weirdness was created! I'd like to experiment with ways to capture just the dye moving in the water, and ways to manipulate it better. I think it could be interesting.

...and whoooah David was on my computer. Whoooooah!

#10 Naked

See, I told you I was going to get some juggling pictures today.

I went to juggling club at Victoria park and had sooooooo much fun taking fire pictures and trying to figure out how to make juggling look good in still photography. And it was so nice out today, the sky was too good a backdrop to ignore. The juggler is Jamie Ruby, doing a three club flash in triples, I believe.

Also, I'm on Lauren's computer, Wooooooah! It's just like mine! Okay that's not so interesting, but still woooooooah!

Friday, September 12, 2008

Drawing the ninth.

It's a Steak-Tastes-Better pill!

....oh. Watch this. It will aaall make sense. Mostly.

(It didn't turn out exactly how I wanted it to look, but this whole blog is for the purpose of getting better at these things. Next time!)

Friday. Woo!

#9 Flower (sort of)

Hokay, I think history is going to be suuuuuper boring (sigh) but I'm sure I can put up with it. And two interesting courses out of four isn't bad. I actually stayed up last night reading the bible... for my Genesis class.

And now for a geeky moment... or at least a different kind of geeky moment:
I think I may *have to* buy an xbox 360. I never thought it would happen, but I've been watching videos of the upcoming Fallout 3 (sereously I don't think it's physically possible for me not to get this game, and the new trailer looks soooo good) and I don't think I can wait for the end of the semester. And now that the xbox's price has dropped I think it's going to have to happen. Gods help me.

Now that that's out of the way, there's juggling tomorrow, and it's supposed to be fairly nice out. I'm going to try and get a few good juggling pics.

Drawing the eighth. (Part 3)

Okay, so obviously still not done (grr). It's taking longer than expected, I still need to add a couple of details and then shade. I'm going to move on to new drawings each day now, and I'll post this one when it's finished. This was a good experiment, though. I like the idea of doing more complicated drawings over a couple of days and posting my progress. I'll probably do that a couple more times.

Today in school Curtis Andrews came into my music class to teach us about the Mbira. Awesome lecture, he had us all up dancing at the end. Mbiras are pretty neat.

Thats all for now. Tomorrow is Friday! Yes!

#8 Crow

I had a great time today photo-adventuring. The gulls up on Signal Hill were playing for me in the breeze, but I think this one might be my favorite. Just as I had had enough of the gulls and had started to walk away two noisy crows flew over demanding they have their pictures taken and immediately started posing. This photo was just as they were loosing interest and decided to join the gulls, one had already left and this guy was hot on his heels.

It's official, I'll soon be taking photography lessons and I caaaaan't wait! This is swiftly turning into a happily busy semester.

#7 Candle

I've added another course in MUN! My mind is all of a flutter. I've spent a few hours tonight going over my old academic records, looking at requirements and possible plans for the next few semesters. School has a history of getting to me pretty fast, but changing my program to Religious studies with a Linguistics minor in stead of the other way around has made me feel a lot better about school.
I still have to revisit some courses that I've either failed or dropped that I really would rather not do.

How about another go at this school thing?

Drawing the seventh. (Part 2)

It's coming along! all of the circley bits are done, now I just have to draw the ornamental stuff and then I've decided to ink it. It'll look way too messy if I leave it in pencil.

Upon walking past this sculpture a few times today on my way to class, I realized that the angle I chose at random is pretty much the most complicated one I could have sat in front of. Good job... I had to take a picture and continue drawing at home today because the weather was not at all conducive to drawing outside. I think it will be finished tomorrow!

Night.

#6 Frigate

I want to eat in the following places sometime soon:
Pi
Twisted up in Blue
The Taj Mahal
Asian Taste
Bamboo Garden

Who's hungry?

Drawing the sixth (part 1)

So, today I'm doing something a little different. Over the next three days or so, I'm going to be showing you my progress in sketching something a little more complicated than my regular line drawings. If you've been to the courtyard between the science, math, arts and music buildings at MUN, then you've probably noticed the weird geometric sculpture thing in the middle. I've always liked that statue, so I have decided to make an attempt at drawing it. Hopefully giving myself a bit more time in which to do this will create a better finished product at the end. It's like a process piece.

I sat in the courtyard before and after my music class today, and ignoring the wasps and bright sunshine, I started to sketch. It's completely rough right now, but I've got almost all of the rings in. Once they're roughly drawn, I'll adjust them to make sure the proportions are right, and add the rest of the ornamental stuff. I haven't decided yet if I want to leave it in pencil, or ink it...I guess I'll have to wait until its almost finished to decide that.

I mentioned that last weekend was really fun, and in fact, it was the kind of weekend that will be nice to remember in the deep dark dreary depths of winter, when we can all use a few warm and fuzzy memories. On Saturday, I attended a house show at a friend's house. It was sparsely attended, but it turned out to be a whole lot of fun. Jon Janes, Ian Foster and Rozalind MacPhail played, and between three musicians, three guitars, a flute, several loop pedals, a banjo, melodica, keyboard, a percussive frog, shakey orange and various other noisemakers, interesting collaborations were created. Walking in the door to be greeted by a very intense, yet mellow song from all three together is definitely a fond memory. Sunday night at the Ship featured that same cast, with the addition of Chris Picco, Dan Ficken and Curtis Andrews. Great vibes in that room, it was also a fantastic evening.

There are currently weird honking noises coming from downtown... LOUD weird honking noises, and I'm at least a half hour walk from the harbour. Mysterious...

#5 Photo-op

Haha, just in time!
Monkeymonkeymonkeymonkeymonkey... Oh wait... maybe he's an ape. Uh. what do you think?

First real day of classes for me! I think they're all going to be interesting... well I have my doubts about Anthropology of Religion but I think I'm just going to make the best of it because Dashi and Django are in the class!... plus if I dropped it, I'd have an ugly three hour break between my other two, seemingly very interesting, courses. And no one wants that.

Oh and did I mention... I don't have any classes tomorrow! Yay! I'll probably go to tai chi in the morning and get some training in before tomorrow's rehearsal. That would be a good idea.

Drawing the fifth.

Just a quick one tonight! Today's drawing is brought to you by the letter E and the number 5.

I had so much fun at the Ship last night. I think I'll talk about that a bit more tomorrow, since said fun resulted in me being entirely sleepy, so I'm off to bed. School in the morning and all that.

360 more to go!

#4 City View

It's been a pretty lazy day today. I decided to walk up to The Rooms to see what was on display and found that there was free admission. There was one exhibition of hand made miniatures of a small town, some of them large enough to tower over the onlookers. They also used animatronics and video in some of them. Photography isn't allowed in the gallery, so no pics. Sorry.
This was taken on the observation deck of The Rooms just before it started to rain. I think I like this more than the ones taken in landscape mode.
I'll be heading down to the ship tonight for some good music. Come down and check it out.

Drawing the fourth.

I've been having a nice lazy Sunday, relaxing and listening to a combination of Springsteen's Devils and Dust and We Shall Overcome albums, and they made me want to either draw a boat on a misty morning, or a dusty field in Kansas... Let's guess which one I picked.

Pencil and ink on paper. When I took the photo, the color of the paper came out a little strange, but I think the purpley blue theme that's going on makes it look more like morning, so I've left it as is. The shading looks better in real life. Maybe I'll upload a better copy of it later...

I had lots of fun and listened to some great music last night, and it's off to the Ship tonight for more great music and hopefully lots more fun!

#3 Takeaways

Sorry this post is a little late, but it's Saturday night(or Sunday morning) and couldn't drag myself home any earlier... this probably won't be the only time an entry happens after midnight.

It was a beautiful day today, met up with some jugglers at Victoria park and decided to try and get some photos in between working on tricks. As you can see there weren't many people there...

Well I'm just home from a wonderful little musical get-together close by and I'll be out the door in another minute to go downtown and hopefully enjoy some more great music.

Goodnight.

Print the third.

I don't really know what to say about this one. It was an idea that occurred to me at one in the morning, but I didn't trust my coordination at the time to handle sharp carving implements. So, when I got up today I found an extra piece of a carving block, and a carve-y tool thing, sketched an arrow, made a stencil, and went from there. I kind of like it. I was going to use some red arrows as well, but I think that would have been a little too much. It was fun, anyhow. I'm going to have to get some more stuff to make relief prints, and hopefully get a little more detailed.

::Edit:: Also, it's acrylic paint, applied to the block with a paintbrush instead of a roller (pretty much because I don't have a roller). I like the effect that the paintbrush made, especially on the blue arrows.

Happy Saturday! I think fun plans are in the works for tonight...

#2 Snaggle-tooth

I'm a MUN student again! Woo!
I spent this morning helping some very stressed people on a reality television show learn to juggle. It was funny how, in each pair, one person always already knew how to juggle and the other had never tried before. Probably not the best way to learn, but it was pretty entertaining. And paycheck to boot! $$$
Then the oracle informed me that MUN would let me be a student again! I rushed out to make it to the last of the classes I registered for aaaaaaaand the prof wasn't there. We were handed the syllabus and that was it... but still, I'm officially in school again!

Okay so today's picture was taken on Duckworth st. downtown, it's of a building which seemed to have a considerable amount of personality. He seems to be glaring, with his odd eyes and his front snaggle tooth at the strange happenings on Water street.

Drawing the second.

Second drawing! I did this today (among other things) during my annoyingly long break between classes. I don't know how the idea occurred to me that there could be an anchor in an apple...it just seemed like the thing to do at the time.

Ink on paper, and then colored on my computer. The uncolored version is here.I'm not sure which I like more, though in both cases I wish the black was more black. It's black on paper! I'm having trouble keeping the quality when I transfer it to computer form.

That's all for now!
